However, before the interview could even be recorded, he was arrested in the interrogation room and subjected to harsh conditions. In the past, he was arrested on the way to the hospital (April 2, 2015) and was unable to attend the funeral (February 12, 2015). Police even broke his leg in a brutal attack in Biratnagar on 3 January 2015. On April 4, 2015, during another police raid, he sustained serious head and hand injuries. Under police torture, he starved to death (September 21-October 1, 2014). Additionally, nearly 100 Madekezi activists have been injured in police repression in recent months. Police have documented more than a dozen fictitious crimes against activists who supported Dr. . Dr. Raut's supporters were regularly harassed and tortured by the police. Dr. Routh received dozens of serious death threats, including from the State Registrar, which officially posted death threats on his stationery. However, authorities did not take any action against those who made these public threats. The AHRC urges the Government of Nepal to respect Dr. Raut's rights to freedom of speech, movement, assembly and peaceful association, which are fundamental rights of all people worldwide, as set forth in the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights.
